Museo de Las Culturas De Oaxaca

We spent 4 hours in this not-to-be-missed Museum in the Ex-Convent of Santo Domingo (pictured below on January 17th). The first section was a nifty contemporary exhibit called "Pintores de Oaxaca". It featured more established Oaxacan artists like Francisco Toledo, Rufino Tamayo, and Wilfredo Lam with newer artists, which was really special. Some of the newer artists were Gloria Camiro, Laureana Toledo, Joel Gomez, Demian Flores, Ruben Leyua, Jose Villalobos, and Laurie Litowitz who did the awesome candy wrapper tapestry.

Upstairs and winding through the beautiful compound were tons of artifacts. Many of them were hard to photograph because the light is kept so dim and flash photography is discouraged. There are some more pictures here. There are many treasures from the tombs of Monte Alban and Mitla that are on exhibit here and there are thousands of objects representing every era of history since on up to the latest.
